What kind of luggage do you picture yourself taking overseas? If you want a stylish and functional suitcase, you need to do a bit of research. A Mia Toro luggage review is a good place to start.

Don't be like me.

The first time I went overseas, I rushed out and bought a massive luggage set. We're talking about four suitcases and a carry-on bag. They all had fabric shells and weak plastic wheels.

From the moment I arrived at the airport, I realized my mistake, but I hung on to my shiny new set of suitcases. In fact, for three years I doggedly refused to get rid of them! Finally, when the last wheel had broken off and every suitcase suffered from ripped fabric and broken zippers, I conceded defeat.

We here at Expat Informer recommend traveling smart. That means a single hard-shell suitcase and a carry-on. Don't be me.

Mia Toro Luggage Review

The first thing you'll notice in any Mia Toro luggage review is that these are hardside suitcases. That's a fantastic start!

Do you want to know why?

Because fabric suitcases won't protect your luggage. They're not that much different from jamming your clothing and valuables in a plastic grocery bag and then handing it to the luggage guys at the airport.

But Mia Toro has more going for it.

For example, these suitcases are stylish. They look nice, and they feel nice. You'll love all the different colors they come in.

Also, Mia Toro comes in at a decent price point. When you compare their luggage to the competitors, you find that they're not that far off. However, when you get into the larger or more premium suitcases, Mia Toro becomes expensive.

But that's not all.

It's the size that counts

What's a Mia Toro luggage review without mentioning all the size options available?

On the face of it, one hardside spinner suitcase looks the same as any other. But you have different travel needs. You're going to live somewhere for a while. You need a good suitcase for your checked luggage, as well as a decent carry-on.

Thankfully, Mia Toro has you covered. Because you're living abroad, you'll want a bigger suitcase than someone going on a quick business trip or holiday. Mia Toro has a wide selection of 28-inch and 30-inch suitcases to fit your needs.

With a polyester lining and a hard shell, you'll know your valuables are safe while in transit.

But don't forget your carry-on. Mia Toro offers plenty of hardside carry-on options. Like the larger suitcase, these small and portable cases include soft polyester lining and a sturdy, hard shell. Thanks to composite materials in the shell, they're light and easy to move around.

A hard-knock life

Speaking of composite hard shells, Mia Toro suitcases offer decent hardside suitcases that can take a beating.

Although we couldn't actually bash up a Mia Toro suitcase in our Mia Toro luggage review, we were able to consult with what the experts say. And the results were mixed.

There's one thing a hardside suitcase should be able to handle, and that's abuse. You see, your suitcase gets tossed around by conveyor belts. It goes through x-ray machines, gets swatted by mechanical arms, and then dumped onto a trailer. From there, burly guys toss it into the airplane and stack it with other bags. And that's just when you leave the airport!

Unfortunately, Mia Toro suitcases come with complaints of scuff marks after a visit to the airport. Of course, everything inside was safe, so that's a good thing. But the fact that Mia Toro advertises their suitcases as "Italian quality" but then manufactures them in China is telling.

This beautiful yellow Mia Toro Italy Tosetti set didn't impress one customer who purchased it on Amazon. They gave the set 3.0 out of 5 stars and said the suitcases were cheaply built and scuffed easily. So if a hardside suitcase can't take a beating, then that's a serious mark against it.

To spin or not to spin

Finally, every hardside spinner suitcase needs four traversing wheels to allow it to spin. That is what makes them convenient for travelers to haul through the airport, and fun for toddlers to ride on. When researching our Mia Toro luggage review, we took a look at how the spinner wheels hold up.

Why?

Because if the wheels go, your entire experience gets a lot more unpleasant. Many suitcase manufacturers put all their work into creating a beautiful shell and then cheap out on the wheels. We wanted to see how Mia Toro approaches one of the critical areas of the suitcase.

When we read some of the customer reviews for this Mia Toro Mezza Tasca spinner suitcase, we weren't impressed.

One person said it rolled well, but another complained that the wheels were not sturdy at all. She even stated that she was afraid they would get knocked off by the luggage handlers! We don't like this lack of consistency.

The reviews say the same thing

All in all, the people who used Mia Toro suitcases the most came away with mixed feelings. Of course, we're talking about real passengers.

We love Amazon reviews because they let us know how products perform in the real world. We consider Amazon customers the review experts. And when it comes to a Mia Toro luggage review, they were mixed.

Many people wrote that the quality didn't match the price. The shells seem flimsy, and the wheels came up again and again in reviews. The fact that so many people had to mention the wheels is telling.

So, in our Mia Toro luggage review, are these suitcases worth the price? Well, it all depends on the competition.

Mia Toro Luggage Pros and Cons

When looking at Mia Toro luggage, we found plenty to like, but also plenty that left a bad taste in our mouths. But that doesn't mean this luggage is garbage. Everything depends on how it stacks up to the competition. You see, if the others are even worse, then Mia Toro is definitely worth the price!

We need to assess the pros and cons of Mia Toro. So let's dive right in.

PROS

Right off the bat, Mia Toro has some great qualities. We love the size options and the styles are wonderful.

  • Lots of sizes to choose from
  • A style for every taste
  • Middle-of-the-road pricing
  • Excellent 10-year warranty
  • Soft polyester interiors keep your valuables from getting scuffed

CONS

In spite of the good, there are plenty of not-so-good things to contemplate. The wheels are a big one. If it seems that we're obsessing about the wheels, that's because it is so important that your suitcase have reliable wheels.

  • Unreliable wheels
  • Flimsy composite shell
  • Cheap construction
  • Some suitcases are very expensive

How Does Mia Toro Compare?

Be honest. The wheel issue scares you a little. Our Mia Toro luggage review aims to help you make an informed buying decision. Letting you know about the wheels is just part of that.

So, how do the others stack up?

We took a look at the competition to see if they suffer the same drawbacks, or if there's something better out there for you.

How We Reviewed

In order to do that, we found a few of the best-selling suitcases on Amazon and took a good look at them. They had to meet the same criteria the Mia Toro suitcases were up against.

  • Right sizes
  • Hard shell exterior
  • Reliable spinner wheels

We didn't look at prices because pricing is all over the board for suitcases. Instead, we focused on quality.

Then we read the Amazon reviews. That gave us a lot of insight not only about the competition Mia Toro is up against but also about Mia Toro.

Note that these suitcases aren't listed in any particular order. Take a look.

AmazonBasics Oxford

First, we looked at the Amazon Basics Oxford suitcase. What's a Mia Toro luggage review without checking out the king of affordable knock-offs? Amazon Basics certainly sets the bar for other sellers.

We love that Amazon offers this suitcase in three sizes: 20 inches, 24 inches, or 28 inches. It also comes in several colors. Also, the suitcase has a scratch-resistant hard plastic construction with monochromatic patterns. You'll be hard-pressed to dent this thing.

Inside is a simple open space lined with fabric pockets for easy storage.

Consequently, Amazon customers give it 4.2 out of 5 stars. Everyone raved about the durable construction of the shell. This is a hard shell that won't break. Also, people praised the wheels, which they said are smooth and sturdy.

Some people complained that the smaller suitcase is too bulky to fit in overhead bins. That could be a problem for carry-on!

Samsonite Winfield 2

Next, we checked out the king of luggage. Of course, we're talking about Samsonite and their Winfield 2 hardside suitcase.

The first thing you'll notice when you see it is that this is a beautiful suitcase. It comes in a half-dozen design choices, from pure masculine to sophisticated urbanite. They even have a bright pink if that's your thing.

The handle is built with lightweight aluminum alloys, which gives us cause for concern. A light handle pulling a heavy suitcase is never a good thing.

However, customers on Amazon seemed to love it and gave it 4.2 out of 5 stars. People loved the interior space, saying they could pack a lot inside. Also, many customers praised the durability of the shell. They said it was strong and held up to abuse. No one complained about the wheels.

Unfortunately, a few people had issues with the handlebars bending under the weight, which is what we were afraid of.

COOLIFE MR. CA

Third, is the COOLIFE MR. CA expandable suitcase. We love the look of this suitcase. Plus they come in three sizes, from 20 inches to 28 inches. But get this: they're expandable! So you can add an extra 15 percent to the interior space.

Made with ABS and PC plastics, it is extremely tough. COOLIFE even goes so far as to put their designs through a brutal testing regime. And on the inside, you'll find a fabric lining and handy storage compartments.

Customers on Amazon gave the COOLIFE MR. CA a healthy 4.4 out of 5 stars. Almost everyone loved the size of the suitcases, and people praised the interior design. Also, many customers were impressed with the sturdiness of the suitcase, saying the handles and the wheels were dependable and solid.

Only the zipper caused a few complaints when it broke.

American Tourister Moonlight

Finally, we checked out the American Tourister Moonlight expandable suitcase. Thus far in our Mia Toro luggage review, we've checked out suitcases that all kind of look the same. American Tourister breaks that trend with their colorful, almost childish, designs.

Get this.

You can choose from a variety of patterns, from pastel flowers to bright in-your-face impressionist paintings. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any bags that were bigger than 21 inches, so they lose out in the size department.

Another thing we loved is the zippered "modesty compartment" inside, so if TSA needs to check your personal items, they could so without pulling everything out in front of a zillion other passengers.

But what impressed us was the 4.5 out of 5 stars that Amazon customers gave this suitcase. People absolutely raved about the smooth rolling wheels.

No other suitcase in our Mia Toro luggage review received such high marks for their wheels. In fact, people said it was strong and took a beating at that airport.

The only complaints were that the handle is a little short. That makes it awkward to pull behind you if you're taller.

Some Thoughts to Leave With

Let's rewind and quickly go back to our Mia Toro luggage review. All in all, we weren't impressed with Mia Toro. Is it worth the price? Thanks to sub-par construction and unreliable wheels, we say no.

On the other hand, Amazon Basics, COOLIFE, and American Tourister all offer fantastic suitcases. Our pick for the best suitcase is the COOLIFE, but if you don't mind the extremely "girly" designs, American Tourister offers amazing value.
