Swiss Gear Luggage Review

SwissGear, sometimes misspelled as Swiss Gear, offers a diverse line of backpacks and suitcases that are perfect for travel. Since there are so many options when it comes to their luggage, we focused on a few choices for our SwissGear luggage review.

Of course, the best luggage for you depends on your needs. If your trip is only a couple of days, you can get away with a smaller carry-on. However, a more extended trip might require a larger suitcase.

Choosing luggage for your next trip is no easy feat, so we hope you learn something from our SwissGear luggage review.

If you just need luggage for a weekend trip, then the SwissGear Sion 21-inch wheeled bag might be perfect for you. It has a locking telescoping handle and four multi-directional spinner wheels.

The SwissGear Sion also has reinforced handles that allow you to carry the suitcase instead of rolling it. You can also expand by up to 2 inches for extra space.

On the outside, it uses a durable polyester fabric that resists scratches. The inside is lined and has adjustable straps to keep your clothes in place. Also on the inside, there are two mesh pockets, one in the lid, and on on the side.

Going back to the outside, there are two zippered pockets. The suitcase also comes with a zippered wet pouch.

PROS

The luggage has four wheels that rotate 360 degrees. That extra rotation can be especially helpful in crowded airports.

This suitcase is small enough to fit as a carry-on on most airlines. So if you want to ditch checked baggage, you need a carry-on that fits.

Another benefit is that this luggage also comes in other sizes. If you use it and want a bigger suitcase in the same style, you can buy a similar model at 25- and 29-inches.

CONS

This could be a pro or a con, depending on your preferences. However, the luggage only comes in black or dark gray. Black is a pretty standard color, which could be a good thing. But that also means it can be harder to distinguish your luggage on the conveyor belt.

Another middle-of-the-road feature is that you can expand the luggage. While that's definitely useful, it can be dangerous if you plan to use the suitcase as a carry-on. You want to make sure that your luggage will fit in the overhead bin.

Maybe you want something a little bigger than a carry-on. In that case, consider the SwissGear polycarbonate 27-inch suitcase.

It has four pairs of wheels that rotate in any direction, which makes it easy to maneuver. The luggage also has a hard polycarbonate shell so that it can protect your belongings.

This suitcase can expand an extra 2 inches, and it also comes with a TSA-approved combination lock.

Inside the suitcase, there are two big sections. One side has straps to tie down your clothing and a zippered pocket for your accessories. The other side has a large zippered compartment as well as mesh and cinched pockets.

PROS

The hard shell on this suitcase can help protect your belongings. Of course, you should avoid checking valuables, but it's still good to have peace of mind.

If protection is important to you, you also have the benefit of a TSA-approved lock. That way, just anyone can't get into your suitcase.

Next, the color options are somewhat unique. The three options for the 27-inch luggage are white, gold, and periwinkle. While others may have similar luggage, those colors definitely aren't the most common.

CONS

While it's not mentioned in the description, the luggage does have a USB power bank. The downside to this is that you can't remove the power bank. In other words, once you check the bag, you can't use it to charge your devices.

Another downside is that, while it can expand, the hard shell is, well, hard. You can't manipulate the shape of the suitcase to fit your stuff.

SwissGear 3-piece wheeled luggage set

What if you need a full set of luggage? That's where the SwissGear three-piece set comes in. The three suitcases are different sizes, including 21-inches, 24.5-inches, and 28-inches.

Each suitcase is expandable, and they all have four rotating wheels. The suitcases also all have a telescoping handle and, like the Swiss Gear Sion, this set is made of durable polyester fabric.

The SwissGear three-piece set has reinforced handles so you can carry them easily. These suitcases each have tie-down straps for your clothing as well as multiple pockets to organize your belongings.

You can choose from black or dark gray, and this set is only available on Amazon.

PROS

If you love the design of the Sion luggage but want a full set, look no further. Having a set of luggage is nice because you can choose the best size for a particular trip.

Of course, the rotating wheels are also convenient if you have to roll your luggage a long distance.

Finally, from the different pockets to the ability to expand your luggage, you can easily keep all of your stuff organized.

CONS

This set is only on Amazon. While Amazon is an excellent retailer, that means you can't look at or feel the luggage in person. You have to rely on Amazon and hope the set works for you.

Also, the color selection is pretty basic. As we mentioned with the Sion, black and dark gray are very popular colors when it comes to luggage. While that might be okay for a carry-on, it can be especially challenging to find in a sea of black and dark gray checked bags.

Customer thoughts

No SwissGear luggage review would be complete without some customer reviews. We looked at the ratings and reviews for each luggage on our list.

Next, the average SwissGear luggage review for the SwissGear polycarbonate 27-inch suitcase is 4.9 out of 5 stars on Amazon. One customer mentioned that the charging feature is great, and the different pockets are helpful for organizing your stuff.

Other customers echoed those praises. However, we couldn't find any reviews that outright complained about the luggage.

Finally, Amazon's average SwissGear luggage review for the SwissGear three-piece set is 4.4 out of 5 stars. One customer loved the simple design and how each luggage can fit into the bigger one for storage. Other customers praised the quality.

How to Choose Luggage

Before you head off on your next trip, you want to make sure you choose the best luggage for you. Whether that's a carry-on, a checked bag, or both, you want to prepare as best as possible for your travels.

For our SwissGear luggage review, we wanted to share some tips for choosing luggage.

A size guide

If you're traveling by plane or train, you need to bring luggage that will fit onboard or that can go in the cargo hold. To avoid checking a bag on a flight, make sure your bag meets the requirements for your country and airline.

You can follow a similar process for trains, too.

However, if you don't mind checking a bag, choose one that's big enough to fit everything you plan to take on the trip.

What to look for

Regardless of your trip's destination or duration, you want luggage that will hold up. The last thing you want is for your luggage to fall apart in the middle of a trip.

You should also consider the organization options. If you don't mind throwing everything in one compartment, then organization may not matter. However, keeping clothes separated from toiletries is never a bad idea.

What to avoid

While it can be tempting to buy the cheapest luggage you see, price usually corresponds with quality. The cheaper your luggage, the less durable it will probably be.

Now, that doesn't mean you need to spend hundreds of dollars. In fact, you probably should also avoid super-expensive suitcases.

Before Takeoff

Before you buy one of the choices in our SwissGear luggage review, be sure to check out the competition. Of course, SwissGear has some great luggage. However, there may be another option that fits your needs much better.

Prepare for safe travels

To figure out if SwissGear truly has the best luggage, we wanted to compare our picks to similar options from other companies. After we had our picks for SwissGear and the competition, we looked at features such as size, ease of use, and organization.

From there, we were able to make our final SwissGear luggage review.

Travelpro Maxlite 5

Via Amazon

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 is very similar to the SwissGear Sion 21-inch wheeled bag. But at 22 inches, it's slightly larger than the SwissGear. This suitcase is lightweight and uses a durable polyester fabric.

You can expand the suitcase an extra 2 inches, and there are plenty of handles to carry or roll the suitcase. The Travelpro has two wheels, so you can't rotate it like the SwissGear.

Inside the suitcase, there are straps to tie down your clothing, and there are a couple of pockets to organize your stuff. There are also two exterior compartments for more organization.

The suitcase comes in black, blue, rose, and green.

Amazon customers give it an average rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars. It's a great lightweight suitcase, and it has plenty of space to organize your stuff. However, you can only roll the suitcase one way since the wheels don't rotate.

CHESTER Carry-On Luggage

If you want luggage with a hard shell, then the CHESTER Carry-On Luggage is worth comparing with the SwissGear Polycarbonate. At 22-inches, it's smaller than the SwissGear, but it's still a decent option.

This luggage also has a polycarbonate shell. It has two compartments on the inside, plus three interior organizers and a removable laundry bag.

The suitcase has four wheels that can rotate fully, so you can roll the suitcase in whatever way works best for you. This suitcase's dimensions are approved by TSA as well as the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It also has a TSA-approved lock.

On Amazon, customers give the luggage an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. It's lightweight and easy to maneuver around airports, which is a definite bonus if you travel a lot through busy terminals.

However, it doesn't have a convenient handle for getting it in or out of the overhead bins. The suitcase also lacks an exterior pocket for easy access.

Coolife Luggage 3-piece luggage set

3 pieces coolife luggage

Via Amazon

Finally, the Coolife Luggage three-piece set is pretty similar to the SwissGear three-piece set. It includes one suitcase each in the sizes 20-, 24-, and 28-inches.

The two larger suitcases can expand to fit more stuff, and the smallest one has a large front pocket. Each suitcase has multiple exterior pockets so you can organize your belongings and access important documents easily.

The suitcases all have four rotating wheels, and they have a TSA combination lock.

You can choose from navy, black, and brown for the color. The black and navy options both have colorful accents that can make your luggage more unique and recognizable.

Amazon customers give the set an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. The suitcases hold up well, even when they're full of your belonging, and they're lightweight and stylish, too.

However, there do seem to be some quality control issues. Also, the carry-on size doesn't fit the requirements of many European airlines.

Our Final SwissGear Luggage Review

Whether you need a new suitcase or want to explore the options, we hope you learned a little something from our SwissGear luggage review. We certainly did!

We learned that SwissGear makes some excellent luggage, and you can't go wrong with any of their products. However, there are similar choices from other companies.

There's nothing to make you want to pass over SwissGear in favor of the competition, but there's also nothing that makes it stand out from the crowd.

It is, however, a solid and dependable brand and if that's what's most important to you, then SwissGear is worth your time and money.
